Read stories full of your Anki vocab
Each story weaves in words from your Anki decks. Words you tap come back. Words you read past don’t.

TranslateHow it works
Export from Anki. Export a deck from Anki and import it into Kototap.
Kototap reads your notes. It picks out the words and grammar in them, whatever your card layout.
Start a story. Kototap writes an interactive story around the words from your Anki decks.
Tap what you don’t know. The meaning and reading appear, and the word is saved to your deck to return in future stories.
Also studying with WaniKani, Bunpro or Renshuu? Kototap imports from those too.
Questions
What exactly gets imported from Anki?
Every card in the decks you pick, and whether it’s new, learning, young or mature. Each card is matched to a word or grammar point in Kototap’s library. Cards you have suspended or buried are skipped, as Anki skips them, and one upload takes up to 10,000 cards.
Which decks work?
Any deck whose notes carry the word on a field of its own, or mark it in the sentence: Kaishi 1.5k, Core 2k and 6k, the JLPT Tango decks, and decks you mined yourself. Kototap reads each note type’s fields to find the word, its reading and its meaning, so it does not need a particular template. Grammar decks come across as grammar points. Kanji-only decks and sentence cards with nothing marked cannot be read, and the deck picker says so beside the deck.
Does Kototap use spaced repetition?
Yes, but there is no card queue. Every word and grammar point in your deck has a schedule, and the reviews happen inside stories: a word that is due is written into your next story. Tap it and it counts as a miss, so it comes back soon. Read past it and it counts as a successful review, so it comes back later. Imported Anki cards are scheduled the same way, picking up from where they were in Anki.
How does my Anki progress affect the stories?
Each story weaves in a mix of your imported cards, and the mix follows your Anki schedule. Cards you’re learning and young cards take the most slots. Mature cards take fewer, and those with an interval past six months come last among the cards you have reviewed — among those, words with several meanings go first. New cards, the ones you have not studied yet, fill in after everything you have reviewed.
Does it stay in sync with Anki?
No. An export is a snapshot, so reviews you do afterwards do not reach Kototap. Upload a fresh export whenever you like and the deck’s record is refreshed. Kototap never writes to your Anki collection, and the media in your export never leaves your phone — only the cards are sent.
Are the stories written by people?
No. The stories are generated around your deck. They are not a replacement for native Japanese; they are practice for the stretch before native material is readable.
How much does Kototap cost?
Nothing during early access, which ends November 1, 2026. After that it is $9.99 a month. Subscribe before then and you keep $6.99 a month for as long as you stay subscribed.
Does Kototap replace Anki?
No. Anki is where you drill the cards; Kototap exposes you to those words in context. Keep doing your reviews.
