Data & licenses

Last updated: August 19, 2026

Kototap is built on open Japanese language data. This page lists what we use, who made it, and the terms it is offered under. Where a license requires attribution, this page is that attribution.

Dictionary data

JMdict / EDICT

Kototap’s word meanings, readings and part-of-speech data come from the JMdict dictionary file. JMdict is the property of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG), and is used in conformance with the Group’s license. The data is licensed CC BY-SA 4.0.

We consume it through jmdict-simplified, a JSON repackaging of the same data, also under CC BY-SA 4.0. Kototap adds its own layer on top — sense groupings, difficulty estimates and grammar patterns — and any errors in that layer are ours, not EDRDG’s.

JmdictFurigana

Reading positions for kanji — which kana belong over which character — come from JmdictFurigana by Doublevil, licensed CC BY-SA 4.0.

Frequency data

Word frequency ranks are derived from the BCCWJ word frequency lists published by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL), from the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese.

Software

  • Sudachi and SudachiDict — Japanese morphological analysis, by Works Applications. Apache License 2.0.
  • ts-fsrs — an implementation of the Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler, the algorithm behind Kototap’s review scheduling. MIT License.
  • Plus Jakarta Sans — the typeface used throughout Kototap, by Tokotype. SIL Open Font License 1.1.
