Also studying with WaniKani, Bunpro or Anki? Kototap imports from those too.
Questions
What exactly gets imported from Renshuu?
Every vocabulary term and grammar point on your Renshuu lists that you have been quizzed on at least once, with its mastery — Learning, Studying or Mastered. Terms you added to a list but have never been quizzed on are not imported, so a freshly added list does not fill your deck with words you have not met. Kanji and sentences are not imported.
Does Kototap use spaced repetition?
Yes, but there is no card queue. Every word and grammar point in your deck has a schedule, and the reviews happen inside stories: an item that is due is written into your next story. Tap it and it counts as a miss, so it comes back soon. Read past it and it counts as a successful review, so it comes back later. Imported Renshuu terms are scheduled the same way, starting from the mastery they arrived at.
How does my Renshuu mastery affect the stories?
Each story weaves in a mix of your imported terms, and the mix follows the mastery Renshuu reports. Terms at Learning, under a third mastered, take the most slots. Terms at Studying take fewer. Mastered terms, two thirds and up, take the fewest, and among them the ones with several meanings go first.
Does it stay in sync with Renshuu?
Yes. Once connected, Kototap checks Renshuu for new terms a few times a day and refreshes your whole record at most once a day. A Renshuu key allows a limited number of calls a day, so Kototap always leaves most of that allowance for you and anything else you use the key with. Kototap only reads from Renshuu; it never writes to your account, your lists or your schedules.
Are the stories written by people?
No. The stories are generated around your deck. They are not a replacement for native Japanese; they are practice for the stretch before native material is readable.
How much does Kototap cost?
Nothing during early access, which ends November 1, 2026. After that it is $9.99 a month. Subscribe before then and you keep $6.99 a month for as long as you stay subscribed.
Does Kototap replace Renshuu?
No. Renshuu is where you drill the terms; Kototap exposes you to them in running text. Keep doing your Renshuu schedules.
