Questions
What exactly gets imported from WaniKani?
Every vocabulary item whose lesson you have completed, with its SRS stage — Apprentice, Guru, Master, Enlightened or Burned. Kanji and radicals are not imported.
Does Kototap use spaced repetition?
Yes, but there is no card queue. Every word and grammar point in your deck has a schedule, and the reviews happen inside stories: a word that is due is written into your next story. Tap it and it counts as a miss, so it comes back soon. Read past it and it counts as a successful review, so it comes back later. Imported WaniKani words are scheduled the same way, starting from the stage they arrived at.
How do the WaniKani stages affect the stories?
Each story weaves in a mix of your imported words, and the mix follows the stages. Words at Apprentice or Guru take the most slots. Master and Enlightened words take fewer. Burned words take the fewest, and among them the ones with several meanings go first.
Does it stay in sync with WaniKani?
Yes. Once connected, Kototap checks WaniKani for newly completed lessons and refreshes your whole record once a day. Kototap only reads from WaniKani; it never writes to your account or changes your reviews.
Are the stories written by people?
No. The stories are generated around your deck. They are not a replacement for native Japanese; they are practice for the stretch before native material is readable.
How much does Kototap cost?
Nothing during early access, which ends November 1, 2026. After that it is $9.99 a month. Subscribe before then and you keep $6.99 a month for as long as you stay subscribed.
Does Kototap replace WaniKani?
No. WaniKani teaches kanji and vocabulary; Kototap exposes you to those words in context. Keep doing your WaniKani reviews.
